BTS’ ‘Butter’ Makes Record-Breaking Bow Atop Billboard Global Charts

Billboard‘s two global charts (the latest of which are dated June 5) rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by MRC Data. The Billboard Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the U.S.

Chart rankings are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

Record Streams & Sales for ‘Butter’ Atop Global 200

BTS’ “Butter” blasts in atop the Billboard Global 200 with a record-breaking 289.2 million streams and 249,000 sold worldwide in the May 21-27 tracking week, following its May 21 release.

The song obliterates the prior weekly marks, held by BTS itself, dating to the Global 200’s inception. The group’s “Life Goes On” opened with 152.5 million global streams on the Dec. 5 chart, while its “Blue & Grey” began with 86,900 sold on the same survey.

Meanwhile, the South Korean septet scores its record-extending fourth Global 200 No. 1, as “Butter” follows “Life Goes On,” which led the Dec. 5 list; “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo (one week, Oct. 17); and “Dynamite” (four nonconsecutive weeks, Oct. 3 through Jan. 16).

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” drops to No. 2 on the Global 200 after launching a week earlier at No. 1, although it surged in streams and sales in its second week of availability (May 21-27), with parent album Sour released May 21. The song drew 135.8 million streams, the fourth-biggest week for any song since the chart originated (up 53%), and 23,000 sold (up 43%) globally in the tracking week.

Rodrigo is the first artist to claim four spots in the Global 200’s top 10 simultaneously, thanks to four tracks from Sour, her debut album. Joining “Good 4 U,” “Deja Vu” soars 13-3, passing its prior No. 8 peak set upon its April debut, with 71.3 million streams (up 62%) and 8,200 sold (up 23%) worldwide; “Traitor” debuts at No. 7 (54.6 million streams, 4,800 sold); and “Drivers License,” which reigned for eight weeks beginning in January, rebounds 22-9 (54 million streams, up 54%; 7,700 sold, up 9%).

A week ago, thanks to “Good 4 U,” Rodrigo became the first woman with two Global 200 No. 1s over the chart’s first eight months, and joined BTS as the only acts overall with multiple leaders.

Rounding out the latest Global 200’s top five, Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” featuring DaBaby, drops to No. 4 from its No. 2 high, and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA, slips to No. 5 from its No. 3 best.

‘Butter’ Also Makes Record-Breaking Bow Outside U.S.

BTS’ “Butter” simultaneously debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with a record-shattering 257.4 million streams and 146,200 sold in territories outside the U.S. in the May 21-27 tracking week.

As on the Global 200, the song soars past the prior weekly Global Excl. U.S. marks, held by BTS’ “Life Goes On” (137.8 million streams outside the U.S.; Dec. 5) and LiSA’s “Homura” (96,400 sold outside the U.S.; Oct. 31).

BTS claims its record-extending third Global Excl. U.S. No. 1, as “Butter” follows “Life Goes On” (one week, Dec. 5) and “Dynamite” (eight nonconsecutive weeks, Sept. 26 through Jan. 16). No other act has more than one No. 1 on the ranking.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” jumps 5-2 in its second week on the Global Excl. U.S. chart (73.9 million streams, up 60%; 5,600 sold, up 39%). She also becomes the first artist with a trio of concurrent top 10s on the tally, as “Deja Vu” reaches the top 10 at No. 8, up from its prior No. 13 high (39.5 million streams; 1,800 sold), and “Drivers License” revs 19-10, after ruling for a record nine weeks (32.3 million streams; 1,600 sold).

Elsewhere in the Global Excl. U.S. top five, Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” descends to No. 3 after six weeks at No. 1; Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” featuring DaBaby, retreats to No. 4 from its No. 3 high; and The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Save Your Tears” backtracks 4-5, after reaching No. 2.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated June 5) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (June 2, a day later than usual due to the May 31 Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.) For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboard‘s subscription-based service.
