Billie Eilish released the music video for her new single “Lost Cause” on Wednesday (June 2), and it’s left her fans hot and bothered.
They’ve picked up every visual and lyrical cue that points back to the central argument of “Lost Cause” (men ain’t all that), from Eilish and her girl squad throwing darts at a sign that outright reads “MEN” to the lyric “I know you think you’rе such an outlaw/ But you got no job” — surely prompting some viewers to click out of YouTube and over to job-search sites.
While her upcoming sophomore album Happier Than Ever, which is due July 30, is ushering in a new era for the 19-year-old global superstar, “Lost Cause” brings a different sound and look from her last Billboard Hot 100 top 10 single “Your Power.” One fan categorized her switch-up in a spot-on SpongeBob meme with Patrick sobbing in one still to symbolize the vulnerability of “Your Power” and him stripping down in another to represent the voluptuousness of “Lost Cause.”
