Insomniac Events announced on April 8 that the production company is moving forward with its flagship festival, EDC Las Vegas. The event will happen as scheduled on May 21-23 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and by doing so become the first major festival to happen in the wake of the pandemic.

But the announcement has left confusion in its wake, with the Nevada Department of Business and Industry confirming that the COVID protocol plan submitted by Insomniac was not approved, and that another plan had not yet been submitted. This left many to wonder how — and if — the festival will happen next month.

Over the weekend, Insomniac’s Founder and CEO Pasquale Rotella made a statement posted to the Electric Daisy Carnival page on Reddit in an effort to clear up the confusion. “The plan that was previously not approved is not the plan that will be used to produce EDC,” Rotella wrote. “A revised plan is currently being worked on with government officials that will be executed to make EDC happen.”

“Please know I have more to lose here than anyone, and I wouldn’t be putting the credibility of EDC, Insomniac, and myself on the line by telling you a show was happening if it wasn’t,” Rotella continued. “The faith and trust of our Headliner community we’ve built for the past 28 years and the thousands of people we employ to make the show happen are too important to us.”

On May 1, jurisdiction over COVID-19 protocols and rules for large events in Nevada shifts from state to county authorities, meaning that Clark County officials will be responsible for vetting Insomniac’s revised safety plan. A representative from Clark County did not respond to Billboard’s request for comment.

The dance music megafest typically draws 125,000 attendees per day, although projected attendance for 2021 remains unclear. The event is currently listed as sold out, with ticket transfers for the 2022 event being offered to ticketholders who can’t travel to Las Vegas next month. Ticket transfer requests will be accepted until April 15.

Meanwhile, Insomniac’s Orlando event Abduction, which happened on April 10 with a lineup including Diplo, Tchami, Flosstradamus, was canceled mid-event due to inclement weather.

To those who have safety concerns about attending EDC in May, I hear you loud and clear. The past year has taken a toll on all of us mentally, and I understand why some may be feeling that way.
